Our British Isles Discovery Cruise is a fantastic opportunity to really appreciate some of the beautiful scenery, history and ancient cultures of the British Isles. On this fascinating cruise Magellan visits stunning Scottish Islands and Highlands, and the beautifully contrasting Isles of Scilly. Discover picturesque harbours, historic castles and a picturesque corner of France completes this wonderful cruise.
Isles of Scilly
Britain’s only island archipelago, the Isles of Scilly lie 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall. St Mary’s, the largest of the five inhabited islands, is a delight with white sand beaches, tranquil waters and stunning seascapes.
Honfleur, with its narrow, half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and charming old harbour is set in a sheltered cove off the Seine’s tidal estuary. Unlike many of its Normandy neighbours, Honfleur was spared during the bombing of World War Two and nestled in its tidy, picturesque streets historic buildings house art galleries, artists’ studios, boutiques, restaurants, cafes and fine souvenir shops.
Invergordon is a key Scottish port with an important naval history stretching back through the World Wars. This town is a charming coastal gateway to the Scottish Highlands and the incredible scenery that forms a stunning backdrop to the romantic castles and historic battlefields featuring in optional excursions along with the ‘Capital of the Highlands’ Inverness. Other options include the Glenmorangie Distillery and a visit to Loch Ness.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands
The capital of the Orkney archipelago, the Royal Burgh of Kirkwall sits almost exactly in the centre of Mainland, dividing the island into East and West. The magnificent St. Magnus Cathedral, a legacy of the town’s rich Viking heritage, dominates Kirkwall’s skyline.
Lerwick, Shetland Islands
The core of this 9th century Norse town is a maze of narrow streets set behind 18th century sandstone buildings overlooking the busy harbour. Hay’s Dock, once the centre of Shetland’s fishing and boat building industries, is home to the marvellous Shetland Museum and Archives.
Tobermory, Isle of Mull
The beautiful village of Tobermoy is the capital of the Isle of Mull, the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides. Neighbouring Iona is the tiny island where St Columba first brought Christianity to Scotland in 563 AD.
Housed in an iconic, state-of-the-art, 6-storey building, Titanic Belfast relives the city’s golden era and traces the story of the ill-fated liner built in the shipyards of Harland & Wolff. At the heart of today’s cosmopolitan city is Belfast’s elegant City Hall, which stands in Donegal Square.
